We Celebrate Caldwell UMC's 3rd year in partnership with the Teuk Sa'at Organization providing clean water wells for vulnerable families in rural Cambodia.
In June, July and August of 2002, we drilled 4 wells for Khmar Thmei Village, 330 families and a population of 1,683 for a total cost of $2,834.15. Because you cared, because you were generous, because you dreamed . . . For these 1,683 people, we MAKE A DIFFERENCE every day for drinking, for cooking, for bathing and for washing clothes.
In June, July and August of 2003, we drilled 5 wells for Bos Kralanh Village, 171 families and a population of 981 for a total cost of $4,396.60. Because you cared, because you were generous, because you dreamed . . . For these 981 people, we MAKE A DIFFERENCE every day for drinking, for cooking, for bathing and for washing clothes.
In 2004, we are undertaking our largest project so far . . . 8 wells for 4 small villages in Siem Reap Province. We are asking for your help to raise $6,061.36.
$757.67 per well ($6,061.36 Total) will give CLEAN WATER to 3,559 Men, Women & Children (631 Families). This is nearly the Population of Mukwonago, WI.
As with many things in the world, the scarcity of safe water is a matter of equitable distribution of resources and funds. We have money and have been blessed with good, clean, convenient and safe water. Cambodia is a developing country with very little money and a true scarcity of clean water . . . WE CAN SHARE our resources, our money and time providing Cambodia with safe water. This is hands on, as Deanna Shimko, from Caldwell UMC, with the support of her church, spends 9 weeks in these Cambodian villages each summer.
The villagers use the new well water not only to drink, but to water their vegetable gardens as well. These gardens are located in the village’s newly formed common area surrounding the clean water wells. Mr. Chea Phan, out of his own pocket, provides seeds to families nearest the wells, encouraging them to plant vegetables in close proximity to the wells since there is adequate water. He returns regularly to mentor them and continue educating them on maintaining a vegetable garden.
Another change also takes place. The children now have time to go to school and obtain an education. Before the wells were drilled, water was often very far from the homes, and its cleanliness and safety were always in question. Women and children spent hours every day walking back and forth hauling the 5 gallons of water each person needs daily. When the children had to carry water, they were unable to attend school. However, with the clean water wells in the heart of the village, the residents are able to gather water close to their homes and the children have the time to attend school.
In 2004, we are drilling a total of 8 Wells in 4 Villages in Siem Reap District. These Villages are located within a 10 km radius of Siem Reap Town on the above map of Northwestern Cambodia .

Q: How can a church find $2.00 a day?

Water, the vital life source that it is, when unclean, causes disease and death among children and adults. The negative health consequences of poor water and sanitation conditions are staggering. Diarrhea caused by dirty water is the number one cause of death of infants and children in Cambodia. The United Nations estimates that there are 6,000 deaths every single day from water-born diseases (preventable diseases caused by unclean water) in developing countries. Most of them are children. The number of children dying every year as a result of drinking unclean water is the equivalent of a jumbo jet full of children crashing every ninety minutes. Water-born diseases account for about 15% of all child deaths under the age of five years in developing countries. Intestinal worms infect about 10% of the population, possibly leading to malnutrition, anemia and retarded growth. Other diseases caused by unclean water include dysentery, typhoid fever, trachoma and schistosomiasis.
When clean water comes to a village, the infant and young children death rate plummets!! And, the disease rate for all persons is reduced.
What Might You Find in Unclean Water?
The local water supply is used by the community as its drinking water, kitchen sink, dishwasher, clothes washer, shower, bath and toilet. It is also used as a watering hole and refuge for water buffalo and other animals. The following can be found in the local water supply: insects, flesh eating parasites, malarial eggs, decaying plants and insects, debris, bacteria, silt, rain run-off, leaves, dead frogs, cow dung, and other pollutants.
Teuk Sa’at . . . Well Drilling Professionals
Teuk Sa’at (meaning Beautiful Water) is a private enterprise locally-based in Siem Reap. Teuk Sa’at, founded by its director, Mr. Chea Phan, drills wells and provides domestic hygiene, malaria and water resource education. Although UNICEF ceased putting wells in Cambodia 8 years ago, Mr. Chea Phan, who contracted with them during that time, continues the effort by partnering with other organizations, such as CALDWELL UMC , and is recognized by the United Nations for the services he provides in 6 provinces in Northwestern Cambodia, including Siem Reap.
