Moving Forward with Shared Ministry

Now that the special church conferences have been held, the votes taken, and the members of Caldwell, Bethel, and St. James have voted in favor of moving forward with the strategic plan for Shared Ministry – it is time to start implementing the plan! First we will form a new team of representatives from the three congregations to provide leadership; and Pastor Joyce and Pastor Carrie will be meeting together regularly. We’ll begin with the strategic goals and objectives in the areas of spiritual formation, mission, connections to our communities, lay leadership, and worship, as listed in order of priority in the strategic plan. Over the next two to five years we anticipate becoming a vibrant area or cluster ministry that shares and integrates programming, with one pastoral and administrative staff team serving multiple congregations under an oversight administrative council, with each church retaining its own name and governing board.

Isaiah 1:1a, 10-20 The Message

The vision that Isaiah son of Amoz saw regarding Judah and Jerusalem . . . “Listen to my Message, you Sodom-schooled leaders. Receive God’s revelation, you Gomorrah-schooled people. Why this frenzy of sacrifices?” God’s asking. “Don’t you think I’ve had my fill of burnt sacrifices, rams and plump grain-fed calves? Don’t you think I’ve had my fill of blood from bulls, lambs, and goats? When you come before me, who ever gave you the idea of acting like this, running here and there, doing this and that – all this sheer commotion in the place provided for worship?

“Quit your worship charades. I can’t stand your trivial religious games: monthly conferences, weekly Sabbaths, special meetings – meetings, meetings, meetings – I can’t stand one more! Meetings for this, meetings for that. I hate them! You’ve worn me out! I’m sick of your religion, religion, religion, while you go right on sinning. When you put on your next prayer-performance, I’ll be looking the other way. No matter how long or loud or often you pray, I’ll not be listening. And do you know why? Because you’ve been tearing people to pieces, and your hands are bloody. Go home and wash up. Clean up your act. Sweep your lives clean of your evildoings so

I don’t have to look at them any longer. Say no to wrong. Learn to do good. Work for justice. Help the down-and-out. Stand up for the homeless. Go to bat for the defenseless.

“Come. Sit down. Let’s argue this out.” This is God’s Message: “If your sins are blood-red, they’ll be snow-white. If they’re red like crimson, they’ll be like wool. If you’ll willingly obey, you’ll feast like kings. But if you’re willful and stubborn, you’ll die like dogs.” That’s right. God says so.

Luke 12:32-40 The Message

[Jesus said:] “Don’t be afraid of missing out. You’re my dearest friends! The Father wants to give you the very kingdom itself.

“Be generous. Give to the poor. Get yourselves a bank that can’t go bankrupt, a bank in heaven far from bankrobbers, safe from embezzlers, a bank you can bank on. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.

“Keep your shirts on; keep the lights on! Be like house servants waiting for their master to come back from his honeymoon, awake and ready to open the door when he arrives and knocks. Lucky the servants whom the master finds on watch! He’ll put on an apron, sit them at the table, and serve them a meal, sharing his wedding feast with them. It doesn’t matter what time of the night he arrives; they’re awake – and

so blessed!

“You know that if the house owner had known what night the burglar was coming, he wouldn’t have stayed out late and left the place unlocked. So don’t you be slovenly and careless. Just when you don’t expect him, the Son of Man will show up.”

The Palawan Orphanage Project

Their mission: to respond to the growing number of orphans and children at risk of domestic and military abuse and exploitation in the Palawan area of the Philippines. The project focuses on Puerto Princesa City on the east coast of Palawan province in the southwest Philippines. With a population of 160,000 there are 71,640 children 17 years of age and younger. That’s almost half of the population! 75% of the total population is poor, landless peasants; fisher folks; and indigenous peoples. Many opt for new opportunities in the city and end up as jobless migrants or are forced into anti-social activities to survive. Their children are left without care and sometimes orphaned. Your support of this mission project will provide basic resources that would otherwise not be available to these children.

Highway “L” Clean-up Day is Sat., Aug. 28

Meet at the church at 9:00 AM – bring your own work gloves! Snazzy reflective vests and trash bags will be provided. We’ll be cleaning up a two-mile stretch of “L” fom the Racine/Waukesha county line (Craig Ave.) to Center Drive. We should be done by 11:00 AM – so plan on a couple hours of fun and fellowship!
