TIME OF PRAYER

JOYS AND CONCERNS

SILENT PRAYER

UNISON PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Mighty Healer, when we feel weighed down by illness or worry, enfold us in your welcoming embrace and restore us. Ruling God, your will is broader than our best traditions and your mercy runs deeper than our finest sympathies. Speak your Word to set us free from attitudes that cripple, habits that are hurtful, and dispositions that divide. Enlist us as willing disciples so others may meet Jesus Christ through us. With the Spirit of Christ we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Luke 13:10-17 The Message

[Jesus] was teaching in one of the meeting places on the Sabbath. There was a woman present, so twisted and bent over with arthritis that she couldn’t even look up. She had been afflicted with this for eighteen years. When Jesus saw her, he called her over. “Woman, you’re free!” He laid hands on her and suddenly she was standing straight and tall, giving glory to God.

The meeting-place president, furious because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the congregation, “Six days have been defined as work days. Come on one of the six if you want to be healed, but not on the seventh, the Sabbath.”

But Jesus shot back, “You frauds! Each Sabbath every one of you regularly unties your cow or donkey from its stall, leads it out for water, and thinks nothing of it. So why isn’t it all right for me to untie this daughter of Abraham and lead her from the stall where Satan has had her tied these eighteen years?”

When he put it that way, his critics were left looking quite silly and red-faced. The congregation was delighted and cheered him on.

Hebrews 12:18-29 The Message

Unlike your ancestors, you didn’t come to Mount Sinai —all that volcanic blaze and earthshaking rumble — to hear God speak. The earsplitting words and soul-shaking message terrified them and they begged him to stop. When they heard the words—“If an animal touches the Mountain, it’s as good as dead” — they were afraid to move. Even Moses was terrified.

No, that’s not your experience at all. You’ve come to Mount Zion, the city where the living God resides. The invisible Jerusalem is populated by throngs of festive angels and Christian citizens. It is the city where God is Judge, with judgments that make us just. You’ve come to Jesus, who presents us with a new covenant, a fresh charter from God. He is the Mediator of this covenant. The murder of Jesus, unlike Abel’s — a homicide that cried out for vengeance — became a proclamation of grace.

So don’t turn a deaf ear to these gracious words. If those who ignored earthly warnings didn’t get away with it, what will happen to us if we turn our backs on heavenly warnings? His voice that time shook the earth to its foundations; this time —he’s told us this quite plainly — he’ll also rock the heavens. “One means a thorough housecleaning, getting rid of all the historical and religious junk so that the unshakable essentials stand clear and uncluttered.

Do you see what we’ve got? An unshakable kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God. For God is not an indifferent bystander. He’s actively cleaning house, torching all that needs to burn, and he won’t quit until it’s all cleansed. God himself is Fire!

Highway “L” Clean-up Day is Sat., Aug. 28

Meet at the church at 9:00 AM – bring your own work gloves! Snazzy reflective vests and trash bags will be provided. We’ll be cleaning up a two-mile stretch of “l” from the Racine/Waukesha county line (Craig Ave.) to Center Drive. We should be done by 11:00 AM – so plan on a couple hours of fun and fellowship.

Hope Center Has Special Needs This Week

The Hope Center is in need of plastic shopping/grocery bags to bag clothing for clients in the Clothing Shop. They are also in desperate need of children’s clothing as the racks are very empty and the first day of school is coming soon. The clothing is given free to clients in need. If you know your kids/grandkids have outgrown clothes that are still in good shape – bring the clothes to church ASAP. Pastor Joyce can deliver clothes to Hope Center if they are at Caldwell UMC by Noon on Tues.

They are also in need of people power to help harvest fresh produce from their Green Power Garden. You could also water, weed, and maintain plants and beds as needed. Project leaders will be on hand to direct and assist with locating hoses, tools, etc. Individuals and groups can volunteer to work: Tues. evenings 5:00 to 7:00 PM; or Sat. mornings 9:00 AM to Noon. Contact Sandra at 262-385-8009 or email sroback@wi.rr.com to volunteer. The garden is located in Waukesha near the intersection of Hwy. 164 and County I on private property. Specific directions will be given when you are scheduled to help.

The Palawan Orphanage Project

Through the end of August all of the loose coins in the offering will support the Palawan Orphanage in Puerto Princesa City on the east coast of Palawan province in the southwest Philippines. Their mission is to respond to the growing number of orphans and children at risk of domestic and military abuse and exploitation. With a population of 160,000 there are 71,640 children 17 years of age and younger. Many people are marginally employed or jobless migrants. Your support of this mission project will provide basic resources that would otherwise not be available to the children.

Help Make “Italian Night” Extra Special

At our Italian Dinner fundraiser on Sat., Sept. 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM we will serve fresh garden salad, bread, dessert, penne pasta with choice of plain marinara sauce or marinara sauce with Italian sausage. You can make the evening even more special by signing up to help! There are things to do in advance, and things to do that day. Check the sign-up sheet! Thanks to our UM Women for coordinating this event! Our goal is to serve dinner to 200 people on Sept. 25. Please put up posters at work, or pass out the small cards to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to invite them. At $7 per adult, or $4 for those under 10 years of age, this is a real family event!
