TIME OF PRAYER

PREPARATION FOR PRAYER  #496 UMH

“Sweet Hour of Prayer”

JOYS AND CONCERNS

SILENT PRAYER

PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

We remember, O God, that we are surrounded by prayer: in every deed done, every word spoken, every grace felt, every act forgiven by others. We open the door and we share a neighbor’s need. A path stretches and we share the journey with a friend. A story is told and we gain a new perspective on someone’s life. A tree is planted and the world breathes a little easier. A meal is shared and hunger is appeased. These are the persistent prayers of your people that we offer each day in deed, word, grace, and action as we pray with Christ:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Ready for Confirmation Class?

If you have LOTS of questions – or you don’t even know where to begin to explore your faith in God – you are ready to participate in Confirmation Class! During the school year the class will engage in study, worship, service – and fieldtrips! While many people are part of a Confirmation Class when they are in middle school, sometimes there are younger or older people who feel the need to take part in this experience. Talk to Pastor Joyce for more info. We’ll probably have people from both Bethel and Caldwell in the class and will need to work on coordinating calendars/scheduling with everyone in August so we will be ready to roll in September.

Join the E-mail Prayer Ministry Team

If your spiritual gift is prayer – use your gift every day to pray for the joys and concerns that are raised up in worship and during the week at Caldwell and Bethel. Pastor Joyce sends out a daily message (the one on Fri. covers the weekend) to the E-mail Prayer Ministry Team. To inquire about this ministry send an

e-mail to BethelUMC@elknet.net, with subject “prayer group.”

Luke 11:1-13 New Revised Standard Version

[Jesus] was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial.”

And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’ And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

“So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!

Special Church Conference on Aug. 1 at 11:45 AM

Our District Superintendent, Rev. Jorge Mayorga Solis has called for a special session of church conference to be held at Caldwell UMC on Sun., Aug. 1 at 11:45 AM. The sole purpose of this special conference is to take a written vote on the Shared Ministry Strategic Plan and ministry model. All members of Caldwell UMC who are present may vote and shall constitute a quorum. Rev. John Sumwalt from New Berlin: Our Lord’s UMC will preside over the conference and will collect the ballots. No absentee ballots are allowed.

Special conferences will also be held at St. James UMC and Bethel UMC the morning of Aug. 1. That afternoon the presiding Elders will meet with Pastor Joyce and Rev. Carrie Kreps Wegenast (new pastor at St. James UMC) to count the votes from each conference and communicate the results to our District Superintendent and the three churches. The majority of members at each of the special conferences would need to vote in favor of adoption for the plan to be implemented.

News from Cambodia

From Sam Pritchett’s blog (http://cambodiasam.blogspot.com/):

I thought I would write a quick summary of some of the highlights from 2010:

• Hot. It barely rained, and even the locals were complaining about it.

• The Kesararam Primary School PC was a huge success from last year, and they quickly picked up on using Publisher to make certificates and signs.

• Khnar Tmei had a smaller class this year because of schedules. Many of my regular students now have jobs or are going to the University. Next year I might need to go back to “Computer 101” and start teaching a younger set of kids.

• The food here somehow is getting even better. The variety is increasing and the focus on quality remains a top priority.

• Basic infrastructure continues to improve. I took the new Toll Road that goes around the town to divert large trucks and busses. The Internet is blazing fast if you know where to go, and it’s adequate pretty much everywhere else.

• Significant social and economic problems still remain. Many beggars, orphans, and people struggling to keep up. I heard more than a few stories of people having to borrow large sums of money for healthcare costs, repairs, and other basic needs.

Should you find yourself with the travel bug to go somewhere exotic, I can make sure you have a memorable time in Cambodia. The people are friendly, the area is safe, the food is magnificent, and you just might consider it your second home after one visit (like I do).
