*CALL TO WORSHIP

We have traveled many roads to be here today.

We come to meet on holy ground.

We have brought with us the hopes and sadness of our living.

We come to meet on holy ground.

We seek a place of encouragement and reflection.

We come to meet on holy ground.

We come to worship, to wait, and to wonder.

We come to meet on holy ground.

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION

We thank you, O God, for your care, for your word that fills us with hope, for your heart that beats to the rhythm of our life, and for your breath that fills us with love. Open our eyes to the unexpected compassion around us in the world, and lead us in your ways of sculpting and shaping your realm through love and mercy. Amen.

PSALTER  Psalm 82  Adapted from The Living Bible

God stands up to open heaven’s court;

to pronounce judgment on the judges.

How long will you judges refuse to listen

to the evidence? How long will you shower

special favors on the wicked?

Give fair judgment to the poor, the afflicted,

the orphan, the destitute. Rescue the poor

and the needy from the hand of the wicked.

But you are so foolish and so ignorant!

Because you are in darkness, all the foundations

of society are shaken to the core.

I have called you all “gods” and “children of the Most High.”

But in death you are mere mortals.

You will fall like any prince.

Stand up, O God, and judge the earth.

For all of it belongs to you.

All nations are in your hands.

Golden Opportunity to Take a Mission Trip

Looking for a way to help others and deepen your faith through service? Join Pastor Joyce and Circuit 37 friends from Waukesha First UMC on a Motown Mission Adventure to Detroit, July 25-31. The deadline for registering for this trip has been pushed back and there is room for you to go – and there is funding available to help pay your way! Youth or adult, if you have the time, this is the trip. It doesn’t matter how skilled or unskilled you may be – there will be an opportunity for you to serve God and to serve others. Economically, Detroit has become one of the poorest cities in the nation. Spiritually, Detroit has much to offer. Talk to Pastor Joyce if you want to go, or need more info.

Join the E-mail Prayer Ministry Team

If your spiritual gift is prayer – use your gift every day to pray for the joys and concerns that are raised up in worship and during the week at Caldwell and Bethel. Pastor Joyce sends out a daily message (the one on Fri. covers the weekend) to the E-mail Prayer Ministry Team. To inquire about this ministry send an

e-mail to BethelUMC@elknet.net, with subject “prayer group.”

Luke 10:25-37 New Revised Standard Version

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all our heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”

But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Ready for Confirmation Class?

If you have LOTS of questions – or you don’t even know where to begin to explore your faith in God – you are ready to participate in Confirmation Class! During the school year the class will engage in study, worship, service – and fieldtrips! While many people are part of a Confirmation Class when they are in middle school, sometimes there are younger or older people who feel the need to take part in this experience. Talk to Pastor Joyce for more info. We’ll probably have people from both Bethel and Caldwell in the class and will need to work on coordinating calendars/scheduling with everyone in August so we will be ready to roll in September.

Special Church Conference on Aug. 1 at 11:45 AM

Our District Superintendent, Rev. Jorge Mayorga Solis has called for a special session of church conference to be held at Caldwell UMC on Sun., Aug. 1 at 11:45 AM. The sole purpose of this special conference is to take a written vote on the Shared Ministry Strategic Plan and ministry model. All members of Caldwell UMC who are present may vote and shall constitute a quorum. Rev. John Sumwalt from New Berlin: Our Lord’s UMC will preside over the conference and will collect the ballots.   Special sessions of church conference will also be held at Bethel UMC at 8:45 AM and St. James UMC at 10:15 AM on Aug. 1 with Rev. Androsky of Waukesha First UMC presiding. After the conferences have been held at all three churches, the presiding Elders will meet with Pastor Joyce and Rev. Carrie Kreps Wegenast (new pastor at St. James UMC) to count the votes from each conference and communicate the results to our District Superintendent and the three churches. The majority of members at each of the special conferences would need to vote in favor of adoption for the plan to be implemented.
