Reader: Today we recognize the legacy of love started with four women in Boston, who were called to service in 1869.  Their work led to the organization known as United Methodist Women.  Today it has a worldwide membership of close to one million.  It is an organization based on loving service, reaching out with god’s love to all who had needs.  As Christians, you have all inherited this “legacy of love.”  God has called you to serve justice through mercy and love.  To spread the good news Christ brought us with loving witness and service. God continues to call us to His service. Members of our Caldwell United Methodist Church Unit of United Methodist Women can tell how they’ve answered God’s call:

me!  That’s how much I love you!  I’d sell off the whole world to get you back, trade the creation just for you.  “So don’t be afraid: I’m with you.  I’ll round up all your scattered children, pull them in from east and west.  I’ll send orders north and south: ‘Send them back.  Return my sons from distant lands, my daughters from faraway places.  I want them back, every last one who bears my name, every man, woman, and child whom I created for my glory, yes, personally formed and made each one.’”

                       John 10:2-4, 14 – The Message

The shepherd walks right up to the gate.  The gatekeeper opens the gate to him and the sheep recognize his voice.  He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice.  14 “I am the Good Shepherd.  I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

*WORDS FOR THE JOURNEY:                              Deanna Shimko

O God, gather us to you as a mother hen, under your sheltering wings, and shield us as we go.

For we are women, people on the way.

We go from here, blessed for the journey that lies before us, and strengthened for the challenges we will face.

We go with the love of the God who nurtures us, the presence of the God who protects us and the sustenance of the God who inspires us.  Amen.

*RESPONSE:  “The Trees of the Field”   #2279 The Faith We Sing

(A woman brings forth a live plant)  More than 128 years ago four women planted a seed for mission.  From that tiny beginning, their seeds have continued to grow until today we see the work of the

women of The United Methodist Church rooted deep in communities around the world.  Just over ninety years ago, this faith community was born and it has been watered and nurtured by our own women of faith.

(A woman brings forth a globe)  Indeed, The United Methodist Church and the women of our church cover the earth from pole to pole.  Our missional giving and our prayers have supported women and children in far off villages in Africa, Central and South America and even in the hills of Appalachia.

(A woman brings forth a Bible)  2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to “do our best to present ourselves to God as one approved by god, who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of Truth.”  Our women of faith spend time in the Word and strive to live by the Word in all that we say and do.

(A woman brings forth a cross)  Galatians 6:2 invites us to “carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”   This cross reminds that we are called to be present for one another in times of trial as well as times of joy.

(A woman brings forth a candle)  A candle shines over all the other gifts we present, lighting the path for the women who will follow us, providing a light so they might not stumble and fall.  As we celebrate this our special day, let us light this candle to provide a light in a darkened world.

A READING FROM THE BIBLE                                  Barbara Stark

                         Isaiah 43: 1-7 – The Message

But now God’s Message, the God who made you in the first place, Jacob, the One who got you started, Israel: “Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you.  I’ve called your name.  You’re mine.  When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down.  When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end—Because I am God, your personal God, the Holy of Israel, your Savior.  I paid a huge price for you: all of Egypt, with rich Cush and Seba thrown in!  That’s how much you mean to
